The weather finally cleared after a few glum days and we were presented with a sunny day with the temperature reaching 60 degrees F. Just a little breeze. Lots of folks enjoying the park: John (Hercules) was giving tennis lessons; basketballers were in action, disc golfers all over the place; families enjoying the playground; walkers and gawkers; 3 teenagers occupied the Patton Tank. UPGers out in full force - eleven in all: Steve, Mike, Bob H., Peter, Anne, Jan, Sharon, Gary, Gary A, Joanie and Ron.

We, as always, played UPG-styled Pickleball and had a lot of fun doing it. Kept two courts busy and even allowed some time for gabbing and socializing. A few players were shelled, being the recipients of overhand kill shots from some of the longer players. No one needed medical attention, though. And, that's a good thing. We played for almost 3 hours. By the end of the session we were reduced to 4 players. No problem there. Two more doubles matched followed. Both beauties. The last one - a nail-biter - was won by Mike and Gary A, over Steve and Ron - 13-11. End of a fine day.

NewBlood - Friday Ball - January 20, 2012

Luckily NewBlood is only used here figuratively. Two new players joined us today. Their first time playing Pickleball on a court, but having played on a driveway with a temporary net. Both youngsters, by our standards, and playing with wooden paddles. But, they are also tennis players and took to the courts with much enthusiasm and vigor. For sure! Welcome to Daniel and Trevor shown below L-R.

Also present: Mike, Lynne, Pete, Steve, Gary A and Ron. After about a half hour of playing we had a rain squall - just enough to wet the courts sufficiently to add a little more excitement to the several matches that followed.

In spite of the conditions we played for about 2-1/2 hours and everyone took their chances against the dynamic duo. 'Middle-agers' that we are - we were able to win some games from the fleet-footers.

Too busy playing to snap photos for this session. Four showed, including Peter who has been soaking up the sun in Florida for the past month. Present and playing tirelessly (almost): Mike, Steve, Peter and Ron. Overcast and cool. Perfect P'ball weather. No Sun-In-The-Face or Wind-At-The-Back to contend with, or if you prefer - with which to contend. We played doubles - switching partners every game and had some excellent, long-volley matches. After about an hour Peter had the good sense to leave while he was still standing. The remainders played 3 Canadian Doubles matches and called it a day. Short on players, but long of fun.

Friday the 13th - 1/13/2012 - Pickleball

Granted, it was cold at the start of this session (36 degrees) and gusty. But it did warm to 41 degrees when we 3 finished our session 1-1/2 hours later. Present for this - the first Friday 13th event of 2012*: Steve, Lynne and Ron. We played Canadian Doubles switching the lone paddler every game. Except the last CD match where Steve wanted another shot at L and R. He put up a good fight.

There were a few lingering ice patches when we arrived. Those little specks in the above photo are rock salt crystals that someone cleverly spread on the ice patches. A first for UPGers.

*There will be 2 more Friday-the-13ths this year. Hope you can make at least one of them. See you then or before.

Pickleball player paucity - Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Lots of folks are out-of-town, or busy elsewhere, so the turnout for p'ball was on the low side. But, five showed: Steve, Mike, Ray, Gary A and Joanie. So, you folks get official credit for your participation. And, that's big!

We are playing on Friday, Jan 13 (Friday the 13th), but don't fret about whether it is an unlucky or a lucky day. We UPGers make our own luck.

A very bright day and a pretty good turnout considering some of our 'regulars' are resting up in Florida or traveling here and there.

We had a new player join us today for her first pickleball attempt. Karen, a GNHA hiker, tennis player and former racquetball player did well and we hope to see her again soon.

Otherwise, these folks showed up and they came to play: Mike, Steve, Gary H, Bob H, Jan, Lynne, Sharon, Ralph and Ron. That would amount to 10 players for those of you who keep track of such things.

As always there were many games played, including a few Canadian Doubles matches.

Fun in the sun and some excellent matches. Looking forward to the next session.

Last of Twenty-Eleven: Friday, 12/30/2011

That's Hoppy above (aka: Buckeye). Recognized by the UPG editorial staff - and honored as the 12/30/11 posterboy - because he made it to Pickleball twice in a row - in the same week! How you go. Below: Gary A and Jan face off against Steve and Sharon (background).

Present for the last official session of the UPG for 2011: Sharon, Bob H, Gary A, Mike, Steve, Joanie, Jan, Lynne and Ron. It was a marginal day, weatherwise, with a chill in the air and some light drizzle. But, we stayed at it long enough for Mike to take an impressive digger (no damage to the court recorded - so, not to worry). Had fun for about 3 hours with some exciting games including what might have been two of the longest rallies ever recorded at Gower Park. Can't swear to it though.

So, we'll get started again in 2012. Hope you and your's have an excellent 2012 and that you come out for many p'ball sessions.

Wednesday, not Tuesday Pickleball. 12/28/2011

A beautiful day greeted we UPGers, and lots of others were enjoying Gower park as well. 5o degrees, sunny w/ a light breeze. Present and accounted for: Bob H, Ralph, Joanie and her granddaughters Prema and Sophia (ball shaggers extraordinaire), Mike, Steve, Ron, Sharon, Gary A and Claude. That should tally up to 9.

Stevo made a good call by cancelling our usual Tuesday session (rain in the AM, and big, big wind in the afternoon). Wed was the perfect day - or perfecter than Tue.

We played for 3 hours. Players peeled off as the session progressed, but not before lots of good games were recorded. The group slimmed down to five. Several more matches were conducted and hard fought - highlighted by some exceptional rallies and volleys. Sorry to say that there was an minor injury. But, it doesn't qualify as a 'during play' injury so gets no official ranking on our scale 10. The unlucky soul walked into one of the shin-high, brick pedestals while milling around and watching a match. Name withheld by request.

Friday Pickleball - December 23, 2011 Quintet

Five showed for p'ball on this beautiful day. 60 degrees, sunny, slight breeze. Present: Mike, Steve, Anne, Sharon and Ron. We played for two hours, switching players around after each match. Finished the session with a great Canadian Doubles match. Then, battled the traffic on the way home. Photos below were taken by Sharon. Ron and Steve (picture 1), took on Mike picture 2. Loads of fun.

Damp Tuesday Pickleball - 12/20/2011

When you leave your comfy home to play Pickleball and you have to immediately turn on your windshield wipers - you rank as one or both of the following: 1) an eternal optimist, 2) not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Your choice. Six arrived at Gower park: Mike, Steve, Claude, Gary A, Sharon and Ron. But, to our credit, even our friend 'Hercules' - the tennis instructor - was teaching one of his students the finer points of the game with somewhat soggy tennis balls. P'balls don't get soggy though, so we carried on. The courts were wet but no puddles formed. Not right away. R and S practiced on one court while Claude, Gary A, Steve and Mike battled on the other. Then, the sprinkles turned into a light rain at which point Sharon had the good sense to retire to the car. We took a few minutes to perform The Passing of the Pickle to Gary A (originally presented to him in absentia during the Christmas Party (See the BLOG entry for December 14, 2011 - now slightly revised)).

The foursome above played more matches ignoring the inclementness (look it up!) after S and R departed.

Friday Pickleball, tennis, basketball and a digger. Dec. 16, 2011.

When we arrived at the courts today they were crawling with tennis players (TPs). Three courts were occupied, but lucky for the TPs two courts we not taken so we quickly commandeered them. Ralph showed up after about a 6-week absence due to surgery. Good to see him back and in the game. That's Ralph above. Below: Jan 'leaps' over the net - demonstrating her agility and gazelle-like athleticism.

Present: Sharon, Mike, Johnny, Ron, Ralph, Lynne, Anne and Jan. We played lots of games but some players wandered off early so there was a shortage of players. Mike - who spied a lone basketball player headed that way and shot hoops for a while until there was a space for him in the next match.

Lynne, while lunging for a sideline shot took a digger and did a masterful job at it. Scuffed up her knee a bit. But, she brushed herself off and got right back in the game. All in all we had a nice day with temperature near 70 degrees, overcast and a little wind.

3rd Annual Christmas bash - December 14, 2011 & Passing of the Pickle history.

Thanks to Gary and Muriel we UPGers and friends had a very nice gathering at their lovely home in Simpsonville. Fifteen folks attended - all shown above minus Jan's friend George who took the photo. Pictured above more or less from left to right: Ann, Sharon, Ron, Muriel, Jan, Lynne, Josee, Claude, Mike, Hugh, Anne, Steve, Nicky and Gary. Yummies galore, spirits and Holiday Spirit prevailed. A good time was had by all. The highlight of the evening was the Passing of the Pickle - a tradition started in December 2009.

HISTORY

The tradition started when Mike and Ann acquired the pickle ornament shown above. During our 1st Christmas Party (December 15, 2009) at Corona's Mike awarded the Pickle to Lynn and Ken in recognition of their introduction of Pickleball to The Upstate (imported, by them from Florida). Below is an actual unretouched of Ken's hand holding the Pickle taken during the party on .

Soon after, Lynn and Ken left for a 3 month stint in Florida in preparation for their eventual relocation to the Sunshine State. They returned to Greenville for a few days in March 2010 and participated in a Pickleball session on March 16 at Timmons Park. On that occasion they presented the Pickle to Ron and Sharon for taking on the responsibilities of tending to the equipment, scheduling sessions and caring for the BLOG. Ron accepts the award below.

During our 2nd Annual Christmas/Holiday gathering at Jan's home on December 3, 2010 the award was presented to Steve (3rd recipient) for taking over the scheduling and equipment transportation duties while Ron and Sharon were traveling. Official, uncut photo below shows Steve graciously accepting the award while friends look on.

The 4th Passing of the Pickle (During the 3rd Annual Christmas Party) was somewhat unique in that the recipient was not present because he was out of state tending to his father. In true UPG form - the show must go on and all that - the presentation was made by Steve to Gary H who kindly received the Pickle on behalf of Gary A. Gary A received the award for the work he did organizing the UPGs participation in the Lake Lure Games this year, for volunteering for the 'Orderer of the Balls' position and for taking on other UPG missions.

But, that's not the end of the story.

Finally, on 12/20/2011 - a rainy day at Gower, with six UPGers present (others having to good sense to stay home) the Pickle was formally presented to Gary A by Steve (presentation pictured below). Sharon was also on hand for the playing session but had adjourned to the car when the rain picked up, just before this photo was snapped.

Tuesday Pickleball - December 13, 2011

A sparkling day at Gower Park. Disc golfers were as busy as ever and two courts were occupied by tennis players. We UPGers - 10 strong - occupied Courts 2 & 3. Players: Josee, Claude, Anne, Sharon, Steve, Mike, Ron, Johnny, Carol and Joanie. Josee hasn't been around for a while. It took her a few matches to warm up, but when she did she dropped many a dink shot just over the net to the consternation of her unsuspecting opponents. Otherwise, we played for about 2-1/2 hours and had barrels of fun. The group eventually dwindled to 4 where Ron and Mike played Steve and Claude. Each team won one match - both hard fought 'guts' matches. A rubber game will be arranged. Best out of 5?; out of 7?

Pickleball Report - Friday December 09/2011

That's Peter above. This is a return not a serve, so it's OK to be toeing the line. Si?

We had 11 players and none of the men noticed the eye candy on Court 1. The same ladies were playing tennis on Court 1 during our 12/02 outing but were not included in the list of distractions in the BLOG for that date entitled Distractions Included. This omission was kindly and correctly pointed out by our very own Spidy-the-Lengthy. So, since the occurrence repeated itself - the reference is included here for your reading pleasure.

Players: Steve, Gary A, Peter, Ray, Jan, Johnny, Carol, Ron, Sharon, Claude and Lynne.

We occupied Courts 3 and 4 and kept them busy. Several matches were played on Court 4, before Stevo realized that the net had not been lowered. There was some good natured grumbling but the games went on with only one formal protest submitted.

Oh. Normally we don't include match scores - but, these two are worth mentioning: Yon editor made the foolish mistake of playing Claude in a singles match. Claude squeezed out a win 11-0. Then, yon editor and Stevie Wonder (Team Green) challenged Claude and Gary A (Team Blue) to a doubles match. It went well for Green eventually garnering an impressive lead of 10 - 3 and a sure win. The stands emptied at that point. But (please don't read any more if you are feint of heart) the Blues took the next 9 points for the win - even though Green-with-envy got the serve back 3 or 4 times. Yikes.

Three came through - Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

Ok, granted the weather looked to be somewhat marginal in the Greenville area with a 70% chance of showers - but, it was supposed to start later in the day. Yon Editor and Steve showed up and didn' t even have to use our windshield wipers en route. We started brooming off one court; then Gary A arrived and we began playing Canadian Doubles. And, it started to drizzle. We carried on. The drizzle turned into a light rain. But, at least it was warm. Four matches later, with no injuries to report we called it quits. The nice thing about playing in the rain is - that we had the courts to ourselves, there were no disc golf players about and there was almost almost no air traffic.

Friday looks to be more promising for p'ball. See you then.

Friday P'ball - 12/02/2011 - Distractions included.

Ok. Here's the scoop. We had a beautiful, bright, no-wind, long-shadow day, only a few distractions and 9 players: Mike, Steve, Gary A, Ron, Johnny, Joanie, Anne, Jan and Ray. We occupied 2 of the 3 center courts while the two end courts were busied with tennis players. And, we got along famously. We played for about 2-1/2 hours, shifted players around at will and enjoyed a sparkling day of p'ball and camaraderie. The thing about Gower Park is that you can always count on some distractions.
We have the final approach to Runway 1 of the Downtown Airport which is 3/4s of a mile away - (as the crow flies) and is directly over the courts. So, there's plenty of action overhead with planes coming and going - especially on Friday afternoons. Then, in the basketball courts adjacent to the p'ball courts - there was a lone basketball player practicing hoops - except he was playing with a football (or, a badly misshapen basketball). A disc golf players had one of his Frisbees land in the p'ball courts. This happens on occasion and one of our players usually retrieves the disc and after two or more tries flings it over the court fence. On this day, a disc golfer - whose disc landed un-noticed in the courts - deftly climbed over the 12 ft chain link fence, retrieved his projectile, then climbed back over the fence to meet up with his companions, apparently without injury. There is never a dull moment at Gower, but the courts are great, they dry quickly after a rain and the lines are easy to see. So, who's complaining?

We had a good day with lots of action. Looking forward to the next session.

'Level Play' - P'ball - Tuesday, 11/15/2011 -

An overcast and warmish day brought 11 players to the courts at Gower Park. Bob H even showed up, proof positive that he did not meet his maker contrary to oft-repeated rumors. Joanie was there too - after a short hiatus. In all: Johnny, Carol, Peter, Joanie, Bob H, Bob T, Mike, Steve, Gary, Ray and Ron.

Today was the first day of trying to maintain (on a trial basis) court play at two skill levels (Advance and Intermediate). It did or didn't work very well - depending on your point of view. For some, the process of assigning players to the Advanced court was a little awkward.

Nevertheless, there were many exciting matches on both courts and everyone got to play as many matches as they were up for.

Johnny showed the troops one of his many model planes that he has made over the years - a beauty made of balsa wood. I wish I tore myself away from the 'A' game court to take a look! (A pointed Editorial comment).

11/11/11 - Veteran's Day - Pickleball

Eleven, eleven, eleven. And, Veteran's Day.

Nine players were on hand and we had a beautiful day to boot. Players: Steve, Lynne, Carol, Johnny, Mike, Peter, Gary A, Gary and yours truly - but, not all of the time. We played long and hard and, as always had many good matches and at least a few that went into 'overtime'.

Note: If you haven't chipped into the Pickleball Fund - please see Gary A. the cost per person is $10. That whopping amount will most likely keep us supplied with Pickleballs for a year. This amounts to the paultry sum of 20 cents a week.

And: We are looking to recruit more players to help fill up our 5 courts, to bring some new blood into our group and perhaps to allow for different levels of play. If you know anyone who might be interested in taking up Pickleball - have them contact someone in the group, or bring them along to a session and some of our players will work with them on a separate court. You will be hearing more about UPG's growing pains in the near future. If you have any suggestions about recruitment, please contact Gary A.

Coming out of the woodwork - Tue, 11/1/11

We had a sparkling day and it brought out a good crowd who promptly occupied 3 courts. Here goes: Joanie after a 2 week absence, Johnny and Carol (out of commission for about two weeks but on the way toward a full recovery from colds), Ron and Sharon (travels, a little surgery (Ron), cold symptoms) both at about 75% after a 5 week hiatus, Jan, Steve, Anne, Peter, Mike, Gary and Bob T. That would amount to about 12 players - give or take a few. Ralph (recovering from surgery) came by to say hello. He'll be out of action for about another month.

It was good to have so many players on hand. As a result there was a lot of good action and many fine games. Some of the recovering players shortened their session but stayed on to gab and watch the final matches.

More Forlorner - Friday Pickleball - 10/28/2011

OK. Three showed up for p'ball on this Friday: Steve, Gary A and Jan. They, played 'Canadian Doubles' until they wore themselves out, then departed. There are good reasons why some people haven't been showing up, but we won't list them here. Too boring for this very exciting missive. But, fear not - our numbers will start increase soon as our members recover from surgery, the flu, beriberi, other ailments and when folks return from their travels.

Gary A has taken over the responsibility of buying more pickleballs as our supply is almost depleted. Each players will be assessed $10 and should pay up pronto because Gary A has ordered and paid for the balls. (The $10 fee is not a donation and the amount is not optional). The balls we are using now, in various stages of wear, and the new batch, will last us about one year. Cheap enough, don't you think? No response is necessary, because we all know the answer.

We are in the FALLBALL SEASON, so the sessions now start at 1:00PM. Even late sleepers should be able to get their carcases to the courts. Yes!

Yon reporter, reported in today after a 3 week leave of absence. Great to see 9 UPGers hard at it on a beautiful day at Gower: Players: Jan, Steve, Lynne, Carol, Peter, Johnny, Gary, Mike and Bob T (welcome back from your travels). Also on hand was a potential new addition to the UPG - George.

Watching the games was hard work, but fun never-the-less. Plenty of action and even a hint of merriment! George had a chance to practice at singles; looks like a good prospect. We can always use more players. Of note: Ralph has had his back surgery and reports that he's On The Road Again. He's doing fine and thanks all those who wished him well. If you didn't wish him well - then, you are up the creek.
For those of you who like to keep track of the number of your pickleball sessions - you are in luck. Stevo has kept a tally of all of the unreported sessions. The UPG Publications Division has posted the information in the 5 BLOGS preceding this post. Thank Steve next time you get a chance. If he didn't keep track of the sessions your individual playing session records would have been unavoidably lost to history.

Weather or not - P'ball - Friday, 9/23/11

We were drowned out of our scheduled session on Tuesday, Sept. 20th and Old Man Weather tried to foil us again on Fri. the 23rd by dumping tons of rain in the morning causing cancellation of the 9:00AM session. BUT, Gary A's and Steve's persistence and weather manipulation brought the promise of sunny skies for the afternoon - so the session was rescheduled for 1:00PM. Eight players were in action: Steve, Gary A, Gary, Mike, Johnny, Carol, Sharon and Ron. Normally, playing after a rain would entail drying off the courts (at Timmons), but the Gower courts were dry and perfectly playable when we arrived thanks to the well drained playing surface. So, we eight played on two courts for over two hours in beautiful, sunny weather. A little warm, but who's complaining? Notice in the photo above that the court color matches the Carolina Blue sky? Nice touch, yes?

Friday P'ball - Hardcore - 9/16/2011

It was a mite windy. And, coolish at 60 degrees (especially after a long run of 90 degree days). But, we've played in much worse conditions. However, only five players appeared for the session: Steve, Peter, Mike, Sharon and yon scribe. We played for about two hours and had some fine games considering the wind kept trying (and often succeeding) in redirecting the balls during flight.

We are getting frequent reports from Anne. To date she has hiked 150 miles and did 18 miles a few days ago. She has been hiking the El Camino in Portugal and crossed over into Spain. Has met some old friends from other El Camino treks she has done.

This was one of our nicest days in quite a while. Nine P'ballers came out to swat the ball around and enjoy the day. Players: Lynne, Jan, Sharon, Steve, Mike, Peter, Ralph, Gary and Ron. We occupied two courts and played mostly doubles plus we played a few partial singles matches. Lately, duos have been practicing 'dinks' and find, once you get a rhythm going, its easy to get a bunch of shots across the net. The unofficial record so far is 40 consecutive dinks by Ron and Peter. This record, like all others we UPGers lay claim to - are made to be broken. Keep that in mind! The dink practice is good for eye-hand coordination and forces players to keep their eyes on the ball.

Eight on Friday - 9/9/11 - Pickleball

Had to use a stock photo for today's write-up. Too busy playing P'ball on a beautiful day, but short on players. But, long on playing. Ralph reported in after a 15 day leave-of-absence while traveling in Spain. Ralph got right back into the game - just like he never left. And, he gave us a little rundown on his trip. Other players: Steve, Mike, Peter, Lynne, Jan, Sharon and Yon editor. We occupied two courts and played mostly doubles. Lots of good matches and scads of fun.

Also: Have heard from Anne. She is in Portugal hiking the El Camino, seeing some beautiful sights and enjoying herself.

And: The UPG is looking for some more players. If you know anyone with a tennis, or any paddlesport background who is physically active - let us know. We'll invite them to the courts and give them a little workout to see if they can work into the sport.

Gusty Day - Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - P'ball

No pictures today. Lucky you. When we first arrived at Gower Park, the weather was surly and some might say threatening due to the ominous black clouds and squirrelly winds. And, the courts were wet. But 6 were on hand, armed with brooms and two courts were promptly cleared of most of the water. The sun, which soon poked its head out of the clouds and the wind combined nicely to finish drying the courts.

Players: Steve, Mike, Gary A, Lynne*, Sharon and Ron. We played doubles and singles and kept busy for 2-1/2 hours.

*Lynne looked none the worse for wear after having been stranded in Iceland while on vacation with Bill. They were unable to fly out on their scheduled flight due to problems associated with Hurricane Irene. They spent 6 extra days in Iceland.

Friday Pickleball - September 2, 2011

We had 10 players today. There would have been more, but the intense look on Claude's face scared some of them away. Players who stuck it out: Mike, Steve, Gary, Gary A, Claude Hisself, Johnny, Carol, Ray, Sharon and Ron. We played for about two hours. The group kept dwindling for various reasons - one of which might have been because we were being constantly buzzed by low flying aircraft - some of them, ours. And, a worker was mowing a nearby ball field and kicked up so much dust that we had a hard time seeing the p'ball. That's the excuse we used, anyway. But, we had fun, and there were some exciting games.

Gary was back in town - this time wearing a knee brace. Someone must have messed up, because it's Muriel who had knee surgery. Muriel is doing well and we are glad to hear that. Claude will be leaving for the coast so we won't see him for a while. He's going to leave his tank at Gower until then because the condo association won't let him park it in the driveway.

Ten players were in action - some, a little sore from the action at Lake Lure on August 26, 2011. In attendance: Claude, Ray, Johnny, Ron, Sharon, Steve, Peter, Anne, Gary A and Mike. It was very windy the whole time, so it was hard to get any really good games in. But, that didn't keep anyone from trying. We kept at it for over two hours.

Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad - P'ball Games - 8/26/2011 - REVISED

The above Upstate Pickleballers, including Johnny and Carol (not in photo) competed in the Pickleball Games on a veeery hot day at the Rambling Bald Resort on Lake Lure, NC. Peter and Josee were also on hand to cheer everyone on. The event was well organized. The matches started at about 9:30 AM, when there was still a little shade on the courts. Hosts Smoke, Libby and their crew kept things moving (no simple chore), provided much needed yummies and fluids and kept track of all of the matches - at times, four going on at one time. There was plenty of stiff competition and it made for an exciting day. The final match ended about 3:30 PM. Congratulations to all the players from Hendersonville, Lake Keowee, Lake Lure and our group who toughed it out in the blazing heat, and against some hard-core competitors. Upstate Pickleballers battled hard and took home these medals: Mixed doubles. Gold: Jan and Mike; Silver: Carol and Steve; Bronze: Anne and Gary A . Women's doubles. Bronze: Sharon and Anne. Men's doubles. Bronze: Steve and Mike. Congratz to all.

Soon after, a good Samaritan gave Steve an electrolyte drink. Steve promptly morphed back into a Pickleball player and he and partner Mike went on to play two more games - winning one of them to bag the Bronze in men's doubles.

Win or lose, we had a good time and met some fine folks and rekindled friendships we've made during other p'ball events. Thanks to Gary A for working closely with Smoke and our crew to set up our participation in the event. A lot of work. Much appreciated.

Windyday Tuesday P'ball - August 23, 2011

Twelve players were in action today including Richard Stone who came 'a visiting all the way from Keowee Keys. Players: Ray, Mike, Steve, Johnny, Carol, Richard, Anne, Jan, Peter, Claude, Sharon and yon Editor.

It was our first windy day in a while, so it took a little getting used to. Lobs turned out to be problematic and loose balls kindly formed up together against the southern fence due to the NE wind. Unfortunately that fence is furthest removed from where resting players sit out, so the enthusiasm for volunteer ball-shagging was greatly reduced. Hint hint.

Richard (pictured below), got to play several matches. He left early with a long drive ahead of him, and presumably, to save his energy for the upcoming Lake Lure Games. Thanks for joining us.

Newsy stuff: Our logo shirts have been pretty much distributed. Thanks to to Peter for coming up with concept of the logo, to Sharon and Steve for getting the order together and to Steve for finishing the job by picking up the shirts in NC and delivering them to the troops. PS: Additional shirts can be ordered in different colors and material. We have several teams that will be heading to the lake Lure Games on Friday, 8/26/11. Some car-pooling has been arranged. Other folks should make their own arrangements if you haven't already done so. NOTE: We will not be playing local pickleball on Friday due to the tournament.

Only 10 were on the scene today, but we scattered the balls, chairs, satchels and ourselves around so it looked like were occupying all five courts. Players: Mike, Steve, Jan, Johnny, Claude, Ralph, Gary A, Peter, Sharon and Ron. A bright day, 'warmish' with an occasional and much welcomed breeze. Steve delivered our new UPG logo T-shirts and they look very spiffy. Thanks, to Steve for doing the ordering, collecting the cash - and for driving to NC to pick up the shirts, They will be on full display at Lake Lure next week.

We played a bunch of matches - several hard fought. Some of the teams that are going to compete at Lake Lure got together and worked on their games. None of the teams are as finely tuned as a Swiss watch - maybe, more like a Timex. But, we had a lot of fun. It took just over 2-1/2 hours to fully wear ourselves out. We had a beautiful day on the courts and the fine weather brought out 14 players: Mike, Steve, Gary A, Sharon, Anne, Lynne, Ralph, Johnny, Carol, Ray, Claude, Jan, Bob T and Ron. We occupied 3 courts for a while and it worked out well. No waiting to play, but folks did rotate so there was a pretty good mix of players - and play. That's Dutchess below. Can't account for the ball location. Can you?

It was a little noisy during most of the session because workers were busy with mowers, weed-whackers and leaf blowers. Fortunately, none of this activity was taking place on the courts. A few planes buzzed us too. But, we played through the distractions and kept at it for 3 hours, although the crowd slowly dwindled as the session progressed. Welcome back to John who has been on the mend after a hip replacement. He came back in fine fashion, by taking a digger and scuffing his knee. But, not much harm done; he carried on for the rest of the session. Otherwise, the ________* wore some players down and led to a few early departures. But, I'm advised by Steve that there were plenty of good matches.

Maiden Session - Gower Park. Friday, July 29, 2011

Twelve players were on hand to christen the newly surfaced courts at Gower Park. All five of them. The courts are blue as seen in the following photos with white tennis lines and light blue pickleball lines. And, a very nice surface. The lines are easy to see and the blue color is easy on the eyes. Players: Mike, Steve, Ralph, Johnny, Claude, Ray, Gary A, Bob T, Peter, Anne, Ron and Sharon.

We played on three courts for a while, but it was hot and folks were taking well deserved rests under the nearby tree, so we pretty much stuck to two courts for the 2-1/2 hours session. Several planes flew low overhead on their final approaches to the municipal airport. Sharon claimed she had arranged for celebratory flyovers - but, no one bought into that claim. New sights: A tank; A one-man basketball game, and two observers. Below: Even though today was UPG's first official session at Gower - Spike and Cupcake played for about 15 minutes on July 27 to take the honor of being the first to play p'ball on the new courts.

Notice that the pickleball lines break everywhere that they intersect a tennis line. That method is very effective for delineating the different court boundaries. Already said once: but, very nice courts and a spanking job. Spike.

Timmons Swan Song? - Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Fifteen players made it to the courts today. Before we got started, the squeegee squad, led by Spidy and Stevie Wonder removed most of the puddles and the 'elements' took care of the rest. Remember: there will be no more discussion about the conditions that have prevailed since mid April. Suffice it to say that as we played drips and drops were deposited on the courts and the splashes didn't come from the sky.

Players: Bob T, Bob H, Mike, Steve, Ralph, Peter, Gary A, Ray, Jan, Anne, Joanie, Johnny, Carol, Sharon and Ron.

We played hard an long, and many fine games were duly recorded in the record books. Highlight for some: Mr. Wonder and Rambo challenged Jan and yours truly to a final game as the rest of the players were re-hydrating. Jan commented in a most friendly way that out team was going to boot Steve's team in the rear - or, it was a statement something like that. Stevie made a gentlemanly retort suggesting that they would beat us handily and the game commenced with much attention from the remaining spectators. Jan's team pulled out all the stops and played brilliantly, garnering applause from the fans and overwhelming Steve's team with exquisite gazelle-like moves. Unfortunately, the sweet moves did not result any points so Steve and Rambo went on the edge their opponents 11-0.

Several of our players have checked out the Gowers' improvements during the re-surfacing process. Now, the proof is in the pudding. Because, we'll start playing there this coming Friday and you will be advised accordingly. Shade will be at a premium anytime after 6:00AM and before 8:00PM. There is a tree just outside the court entrance. So, some may cluster under it like range cattle - but, I doubt it. Any one with a solar phobia might want to consider bringing some sort of personal shade providing device (PSPD) like an umbrella or a wide-brimmed hat. We UPers are a tough lot, so we'll figure it out. Spike

Johnny's Day - Friday, July 22, 2011 - Upstate Pickleball.

Johnny (Hoot) is featured today because it's his Birthday and he's an all-around nice guy. Plus, his darling wife Carole, who wasn't playing today, but was kind enough to stop by to deliver some scrumptious cookies. Hoot lucked out and didn't have to suffer through the UPG's off-key version of Happy Birthday. He departed just before we started tuning up. Smart move.

No more talk about the weather except to say that we dripped a lot. Twelve players were on hand: Gary A, Mike, Ralph, Peter, Anne, Jan, Johnny, Bob T, Claude, Steve, Sharon and Ron. We played for about 3 hours and had more than a few exciting matches. As previously noted, several teams have formed to participate in the Lake Lure games. So, these duos have been trying to get in at least a few games together during each session to work out any kinks in their play. So far, no kinks have been reported.

Maybe, just maybe we'll be playing at Gowers Park next week. We checked the courts out on Saturday, July 23rd. The finishing touches were in progress. Stay tuned. Also: several UPGers have expressed an interest in getting logo T-shirts. Steve has been in contact with a T-shirt firm and Sharon is compiling a list of sizes. A design has not been selected, but plenty of ideas have been suggested.

Tuesdayball and Steve's 54th - July, 19, 2011

Fifteen UPGers were on the scene today, and showed little concern for the hot, humid weather that has been our friend since mid-April. The courts were very puddled, but we managed to push most of the water off the playing surface with Stevie Wonder's 100-year old push broom with its withered bristles. Players: Bob H, Jan, Steve, Anne, Lynne, Carol, Johnny, Peter, Bob T, Joanie, Ralph, Gary A, Mike, Sharon and Ron.
Today was Steve's 54th Birthday and was duly celebrated with an only somewhat off-tune rendition of Happy Birthday and yummy home-made cupcakes kindly provided by Jan.
We also took time out to play many rousing p'ball matches. Jan (mentioned thrice, so far - at the cost of a hefty bribe) was on the winning side of 5 consecutive matches - which is some kind of record, but it is not known which one. Will check the archives and report. Below: That's Stevarino protecting the 'kitchen' with Carol (Lash) standing by.

Newsy stuff: Gary A - Commander-in-chief of the UPG Traveling Team reports that we now have 3 men's, 3 women's and 6 mixed teams that will participate in the Lake Lure Games. And: If all goes well, we may be able to start playing at Gowers next Tuesday (July 26th). Directions will be sent out via the UPG Communications Network Facilitator. July 12, 2011- P'ball

Fourteen players were on hand for another humid p'ball session at Timmons Park. Even at the 9:30AM start time the weather was steamy; the temp continued to rise as we progressed through the 3-hour session. Players: Steve, Mike, Ralph, Gary, Gary A, Bob H, Georgianna, Jan, Anne, Johnny, Joanie, Peter, Sharon and Ron.

There was lots of action on both courts and the H and H didn't seem to slow anyone down. Eight teams have been formed for the upcoming Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad (Lake Lure). The teams have been practicing - by playing games together as opposed to our usual random method of forming teams. OBSERVED: some of the newly-formed teammates have been seen whispering, gesturing toward their opponents, and using not-so-subtle hand-signals. Apparently, this activity is related to a sophisticated playing strategy new to UPGers.

Otherwise: Bob H managed to hit himself in the mouth with his paddle. He ended up with a fat lip. Thankfully, his paddle is OK. Georgianna, visiting from AZ may, or may not, be back for one more session. In any case we enjoyed her company and her play. We UPGers have a standing invitation to visit her pals in AZ to play a little p'ball on dedicated courts.

Friday P'ball - July 8, 2011

Another humid day, but that didn't keep the troops from coming out in full force. We had thirteen players including a guest - Georgianna - from Arizona visiting her friend Dodie who is from the Greenville area. The list: Mike, Ralph, Lynne, Joanie, Georgianna, Gary A, Bob H, Johnny, Carol, Steve, Claude, Sharon and yon editor-in-chief.

Joanie (with granddaughter Prema in tow) was back in action after a few weeks leave-of-absence. Didn't take her long to get back into the swing of things. Welcome back in the fold. Georgianna moved right into rotation and played many good games. She'll be back for a few more sessions. She is featured in the next collage. Her friend Dodie watched the matches and was kind enough not to look bored silly. How could she be with so much exciting action?

We played continuously for over 3 hours and probably all dropped a few pounds in the process. Some teams played practice sessions in preparation for the Lake Lure games. In our crowd - Spidy & Stevie Wonder are the team to beat in men's doubles. No simple chore. We UPGers are concentrating on more net play and are playing the occasional 'dink' shot. Encouragingly, a few of them have landed in bounds. Stevo has been hefting many lobs with high success rate. Darn it!

It ain't the heat - it's the humidity - Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Well, the temperature managed to lag under 90 degrees, but the humidity easily topped that. So, it didn't take long for the troops to heat up and start dripping all over the courts. Eleven players present: Bob H, Steve, Mike, Pete, Lynne, Carol, Johnny, Gary, Ralph, Sharon and Ron.

We played for about 2-1/2 hours, but the thick air drove off some of the players early. Several teams have been assembled for the Lake Lure event coming up in August. We are still waiting to hear from a few players who are traveling. Gary A is coordinating our participation in this event. So, check with him if you want to see about forming a team.

Some of the players have started playing together as teams to work out any kinks. Believe it or not, a few have surfaced (kinks, that is). It is expected that some of the 'flawed' play will be ironed out in the next few sessions. Yup.

Friday ball - July 1, 2011

Eleven players were on hand for today's matches: Claude, Mike, Ralph, Gary, Gary A, Johnny, Joshua (Johnny's & Carol's son), Sharon, Peter, Lynne and Ron. We were busy on the courts, so there wasn't much time for photos. The picture above would indicate a lack of 'busyness', but, in fact it was taken during the only lull in activity. Really! We played hard and long - 3 hours to be exact. Joshua, visiting from Texas, gave p'ball a try for the first time. A youngster by our standards, he picked up the game immediately and after a few matches became a fierce and fearsome competitor. He now holds the UPG all-time vertical leap record of 3 feet 6.5 inches topping the old record of 6.5 inches. During his record-breaking leap - Josh pounded an overhand kill shot. Luckily it didn't land on the court nor was it embedded in an opponent. It inserted itself in the court fence and is there to this day (a true-likeness picture is available on request). Olympiad news: So far these teams have been set. Men's doubles: Spidy/Stevie Wonder and Spike/Gary. Mixed doubles: Spidy/Jan and Spike/Cupcake. The UPG has several more possibilities for teams which include: Men's and Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Get yourself a partner pronto. Don't be left in the dust holding your sweaty sneakers. Tuesday Pickleball - June 28, 2011

Fourteen players showed up on this hot, sunny day and there was plenty of action. Enough to keep the courts smoldering for over 3 hours. Peter, Mike, Steve, Johnny, Carol, Jan, Lynne, Ralph, Sharon, Anne, Gary, Gary A, Claude and yon editor (no longer retired).

OFFICIAL NEWS: Steve has kindly volunteered to take on the Session scheduling and to be the keeper of the p'ball equipment. Gary A is going to coordinate our participation in the pickleball tournament at the Olympiad Games to be held on August 26 at Lake Lure. Competition will take place in one day. Events will include, mixed doubles and men's/women's doubles. Some UPG teams have already been formed. Make a committment now. Otherwise, Gary A will be nagging you relentlessly. Note: We are even trying to get Lynn and Ken (UPG founders) to come north from sunny Florida to compete in the event. I will continue taking care of the BLOG if I can find the time -between my International Correspondence School anger management sessions and bongo classes.

Pickleball Session - Friday, June 18, 2011

We had a nice day, 11 players and plenty of action including an outburst from yon editor for which I offer my apologies. So, here we go with the important stuff. Players: Steve, Mike, Gary, Gary A, Jan, Bob H, Bob T, Peter P, Lynne, Sharon and Ron. We battled on for 3 hr 15 min, thought the crowd was somewhat diminished after the 2-1/2 hour mark.

We finished off the day with several 'A' games with well-matched teams and consequently - hard fought games. "Best of three? How about one more?" News: Cupcake bought a new paddle and didn't like it. Gary tried it out then offered her a whopping $4 for it. It's on its way back to the dealer. Gowers courts are now supposed to be ready in July. Ho-hum. Smoke, of the Lake Lure P'ballers has been in contact with the UPG Interstate Sorta' Competition Committee. He is interested in bringing down some of the crew for an informal p'ball session. Friday Ball - June 10, 2011

UPG has gone high tech. Here, Gary A uses a leaf blower to dry off one of the few puddles on the court. When the job was finished he parked it near where we place our paddles against the practice wall (see below). Some players who arrived later worked up quite a lather fearing that the device was some kind of a new fangled, mechanical paddle with ball serving capabilities - not unlike a pitching machine. They settled down once they learned its function and we got into some great p'ball action on another hot SC day.

Eleven p,ballers saw action: Mike, Gary, Gary A, Steve, Bob T, Lynne, Jan, Anne, Johnny, Sharon and Ron. Gary A, who brought a nice batch of Toll House cookies - is now one of the several contenders for the Coveted Pickle award. Everyone should keep this in mind.

Even though is was another 90 degree day - the matches were hot and heavy and many good games are in the record books. Oh, almost forgot. The topic of 'yelling' came up after one of our greatest players made an exuberant, encouraging remark to his/her partner. One of his/her opponents claimed it was 'yelling' and therefore a distraction. There was considerable debate on the issue and it was finally decided by the UPG Rules Enforcement Committee - that just happened to be on site - that the sound was not a 'yell' because it did not exceed 85db for 30 seconds. The player (one of the greatest of all times) was exonerated, and was allowed to roam freely for the rest of the session: the complainant was relegated to ball shagging duties for the rest of the session.

Looking forward to more action (and, off-court excitement). How's June 14th sound? No need to respond.

Another hot day. Thirteen players arrived on the scene and when the session was

over - 3 hours and 15 minutes later - 4 were still standing. But, just barely. Players: Steve, Mike, Carol, Johnny, Lynne, Jan, Ralph, Gary, Gary A, Joanie (getting back into the groove), Bob T, Sharon and Ron.

We rotated on the courts and everyone one played with everyone, or - someone played against someone - can't remember which, though. Above: Bob T shows off his fancy footwork. Below: Jan in action.

There were some exceptional matches - at least one went into 'overtime' the final score: 14-12. Glad to have Joanie back. She brought along her Granddaughter and sidekick Prema who was kind enough to shag balls for us. Looks like the hot spell will be with us for a while. We'll have to tough it out. Fry-day P'ball - June 3, 2011

Well, it turned out not to be hot enough to warrant the "Fry-day" moniker - but, the editorial staff is sticking with it because that term was used to advertise the event. Ten players made an appearance for the session: The 4 above - Ralph (Ricky Ricardo) and Sharon (Cupcake) hitting to Jan and Gary A (Rambo). Plus: Mike, Steve, Anne, Peter P, Johnny and yon editor. We kept the courts busy for 2-1/2 hours and had a bunch of hard-fought matches and scads of fun, too.

As the troops drifted off, four of us migrated to one court and got in 3 tight matches that included nice long rallies and some serious net play. We were pretty much spent by the end of the triple header. Teams: Stevie Wonder and Rambo vs Spidy and Spike. While we played, Cupcake and Dutchess sat on the sideline in the only patch of shade left on the court and had a very pleasant gab session. A nice day all around.

Special note: Thanks to Gary A for bringing a packet of first aid supplies that we hope we'll never need.

Heated Moments - Tuesday, May 31, 2011

But, only temperature wise. Thirteen players checked in but none checked out on our hottest day this season according to the UPG historical annuls. Players: Mike, Peter, Peter P, Jan, Anne, Johnny, Carol, Gary, Gary A, Steve, Ralph, Sharon and Ron. Somehow we managed to play for 3 hours, thought the number of players slowly declined as the session wore on and the sun and temperature rose higher. Gary A, now un-bandaged and looking good, gave Spidy a new T-shirt to replace the one he used to bandage Gary on the day of the "accident" (See the May 19th post).

We had 15 players on the courts and a perfect pickleball day weatherwise and otherwise: Sunny, warm with a slight breeze. Players: Anne, Jan, Carol, Johnny, Mike, Lynne, Steve, Bob H, Bob T, Catherine, Peter P, Gary, Ralph, Sharon and yours truly.
Below: Gary gave a demonstration of the 'Classic Poach Technique'. Every UPGer practices this maneuver, but except for Stevie Wonder - no one else has mastered it. But, practice makes perfect!

We played for almost 3 hours. Due to the crowd, there was some down time, but no formal complaints were registered. Everyone minded their Ps and Qs, and there were no tumbles - not for the lack of trying though. So, there is not much to write about - unless the editorial staff makes something up. But, not today. Lucky you.

So, stay tuned for the next P'ball Session announcement - which, as always, will come to you via electronic mail. We are looking at Friday the 27th if T-storms don't foil us.

As reported by Stevarino, aka Stevie Wonder: Nine players were present including never-say-die Gary (Rambo) A. Players: Gary, Muriel, Gary A, Bob T, Mike, Jan, Ralph, Peter and Steve.

Steve advises the the crew had a beautiful, windless day and kept at it for over 3 hours. The play was hard and fast and no accidents or injuries were reported.

Muriel brought a cake - so, the players were able to keep themselves happily nourished throughout the session.

Gary A bites the dust day. Thursday, May 19, 2011

Eight were in action today - for a while anyway! Present: Gary A (Hardcore), Mike, Steve, Jan, Johnny Carol, Sharon & Ron. In the first few minutes of the first match of the day, Gary ran forward to return a drop shot, slipped somehow and took an awful digger landing on his face and hands. He ended up with a nasty cut on his forehead and the bridge of his nose. First aid was immediately required - that's when we found out how ill prepared we were for such an event. Everyone pitched in. Kleenex didn't suffice, but Spidy had a spare T-shirt, tore it up and wrapped around Gary's head Rambo style. Gary stayed cool the whole time.

After a while he was feeling OK, and wouldn't hear of anyone accompanying him to the hospital. So, off he went, saying he'd be back. We cleaned up the court and carried on. Played for 2 more hours. Near the end of our session Gary returned decorated as seen below. With his forehead and nose stitched up. At his insistence, we even batted the ball around with him for a few minutes.

It was a very scary scene for a while and we are thankful that, except for his patched up wounds and some other sore spots that showed up - on his palms, elbows and one knee - he's A-OK.

Just so everyone knows: Gary wasn't trying for some outlandish, diving shot. It was just a good try for a ball and he took a tumble. He earns a Hardcore ranking for his toughness and coolness while we were busy trying to find basic first aid items which would have helped enormously. We learned something from this experience, and we will be better prepared in the future.

No bad luck today - Friday the 13th - P'ball - AMENDED

Looks confrontational, but it wasn't! Just a serious discussion - probably about a minor topic. Friday the 13th brought no bad luck - except for the players on the wrong end of scoring routs. Players: Mike, Bob H, Bob T, Peter, Peter P, Anne, Steve, Ralph, Claude, Lynne, Gary, Carol, Johnny, Sharon and Ron. Fifteen players makes for some down time on two courts, so we stayed at it for 3 hours and 15 minutes finishing at 82 degrees. No one dropped, though.

Dutchess (shown above) celebrated her Birthday. P'ballers, reluctantly stopped their oh-so-important matches to offer up a sorry rendition of Happy Birthday. At least one players was on key and a few knew the tune.

As seen in the top photo, Claude has returned to the Greenville area after a several months hiatus.

Bob T and Stevie Wonder formed up to play Mighty Spidy and Yon Editor in the last two matches of the day and won both. It's a painful thing to report. (Corrected version of original posting).

And, so ended another fun day of P'ball. We are all looking forward to the next session. Watching the wx.

Yon Editor was back on site today along with 12 other players: Mike, Steve, Gary, Gary A, Ralph, Bob T, Bob H, Anne, Jan, Peter P, Johnny and Carol. It was a warm, bright day and was made a little more special because Buckeye brought along a swell batch of brownies. Above: Fleetfoot Bob T in action.

As the day progressed and the temp worked its way to 82 degrees, the Baker's dozen shriveled down to four who played a coupled of exciting 'A' matches. We managed to keep at it for 3 hours.

Thanks to Stevie Wonder for organizing the Pickleball Sessions for the last few weeks. And, thanks to Dick Stone of the Keowee Keys crowd for sending two shirts that we UPGers left dangling from the pickleball court fence when we visited on April 18th.

The photo above is not posted just to demonstrate Mighty Spidy's p'ball form. It is to show the blue, rain free sky that appeared shortly after 4 p'ballers elected to leave due to wet courts and drizzly conditions. You must have more faith in the UPG Weather Arrangers! That's why they get the big bucks. Let's see. Gary was on site first; he contemplated the conditions then drove off. Ralph appeared, but didn't get out of his car and off he went. Peter P came, saw, drove off, but never left the park and returned. Carol and Johnny arrived. Johnny walked down to the court, gabbed a little and left. In the mean time, Mike, Steve, Peter P, Sharon and yon writer-of-sorts began playing on the wet (but, not slippery) courts. The drizzle stopped almost immediately, a breeze arrived on schedule, the sun peeked through the clouds and the courts began to dry as they always do in such conditions. We played for 2-1/2 hours.

Spidy was very busy as can be readily seen in the collage above. The play of the day is shown bottom right where he served from the prone position.

P'ball - Thursday, April, 21, 2011 - Weather-driven

The courts were puddle-laden when we arrived at 9:30AM. But, our de-watering crew aptly led by the UPG's 2011 version of The American Gothic duo got one court dried out in short order. We started playing on that court while the rest of the troops worked on the other. As ordered, a slight breeze arrived, and the sun showed its face. In about 15 minutes both courts were in use by these players: Sharon (Cupcake) & Gary A (Too-Tall), both shown above, Steve, Jan, Gary, Pete P, Johnny and this scribe. It turned out be be a beautiful day, so we kept blasting away for just over two hours. Stevie Wonder was on fire and some of his opponents have minor flesh wounds to prove it. Ten players were on hand for today's games and we had a nice day. Warm, sunny and just enough of a breeze to keep it interesting. Players: Anne, Jan, Gary A, Steve, Joanie, Johnny, Carol, Peter P, Sharon and yon editor. There was much discussion about our 4/18/11 visit to Keowee Keys and the great time we had. We also played pickleball for 2-1/2 hours and had a good time at it, as we always do.

Watching the weather for Thursday and Friday. Both have chances for showers. Will consult with our weather team and plan accordingly. The team (actually, weather arrangers) have been 90% correct 50% of the time. Spike

Keowee Keys Day - Monday, April 18. 2011

We seven (Jan, Gary, Peter, Anne, Joanie, Sharon and Ron) motored to Keowee Keys and arrived at 9:45AM - 15 minutes ahead of schedule even though your's truly managed to get turned around a few times en route (but, only once on the return trip)! The P'ballers at KK were about as prepared for our visit as any group could be. They have two nice tennis courts marked for pickleball as seen in the photos below. Benches, iced water and other drinks right there at the courts, a nearby gazebo for spectators, and players to cool their heels, 'facilities' within easy walking distance, and a bunch of p'ballers raring and ready to go. Dick Stone and Richard Webster introduced us to their players that numbered about 10 and we got under way. For a while the men played on one court and the women on the other and some hot matches followed. D and R kept things moving, shifting players around, setting up matches. We took a lunch break at a pavilion all of 200 feet from the courts where an exceptional lunch awaited us: deli sandwiches with choice of trimmings, chips, coolers filled with cold beverages including some kind of carbonated barley drink, assorted, home-made cookies, lemon bars, chocolate cake and brownies. We waddled back to the courts, where we started playing mixed doubles on both courts. More good games. A little breeze perked up, but had almost no impact on the matches. Beautiful, warm weather all day.

That's the report for this fun day with our pickleball pals from Keowee Keys. We played for four hours including a lunch break. Everyone was pretty tuckered out when we quit at 2:00PM. Well Ron, I guess it was just the 4 of us. Me, Mike, Gary A and Anne. Believe it or not nobody wanted to quit. We went for almost 3 hours and kept rotating and no one even sat down to take a break. It was a lot of fun. Lot of good games and a lot of exciting volleys.

Thursday P'balls Session - April 14, 2011

It was an off day, so we were short on p'ballers. Little wind for a change, so we found that we had to 're-learn' how to play under calm conditions. We played for 2-1/2 hours and had plenty of fun in the process and logged a bunch of matches including a few notable comebacks. There are no pictures to document this session because the UPG photographer and assistants were always busy playing on the courts.

April 12, 2011 - Wind again! Pickleball

OK. This is all we are going to say about the ever present wind on the UPG Pickleball courts. Just wanted to let you know about the conditions - so, we brought our professional grade anemometer along, set it up and within seconds it blew away and was last seen near the visitors dugout on the baseball field 200 yards away. End of topic. Seven players were on hand: Mike, Steve, Gary, Jan, Bob T, Sharon and Ron. We played doubles on one court and Canadian Doubles on the other. For whatever reason, some players didn't stay all that long. So the day ended with four players pounding out several fine doubles matches. Fun to play and fun to watch. That' Bob T below.

Of note: We were visited by a not-very-healthy female black widow spider. Sharon tried to move it to a safe place without any luck. But, none other than Spidy himself came to the rescue, retrieved the egg-laden arachnid and gently moved her off the court. You go Spidy!

Please note - for the record - that Mr. Steve (Stevie) Wonder delivered an exceptional batch of Toll House cookies to the troops, as he vowed to do after some pressure was applied. So, he is back in our good graces and he will be allowed to bring another batch in the immediate future.

Friday Pickleball - April 8, 2011

Sixteen players were on the scene today including Bob T who finally returned from Florida after an extensive leave of absence. He was armed with a new paddle, but didn't use it during the matches. Welcome back. The entire lineup: Mike, Steve, Johnny, Joanie, Lynne, Gary, Gary A, Peter, Peter P (Pete), Bob H, Jan, Anne, Ralph, Bob T, Sharon & Ron. The weather: Windy as usual, partly cloudy in the 70s.

We played for 3 hours and had some real battles. But, with so many players there was plenty of down time as indicated in the photo below. Even Spidy sat down and Ralph smiled*. Two rare events.

We rarely report scores of matches - but, an anonymous UPG roving reporter 2nd class - wired in the the following story which has been slightly revised by the editor. Ralph (Rocky) and Gary A (Too Tall) were playing Stevie Wonder and Jan (Madonna). Rocky and Too Tall were being unmercifully flogged and fell behind 8-1. But, the Mutt & Jeff duo rallied behind some strong playing, great pickleball strategy, considerable fan support and a few bad line calls and took the win 11-8! *That's why Rocky is smiling in the photo above and that is also why he savored the moment when he got home by indulging in two glasses of Merlot. Good show. Please note that the 3 nicknames: Rocky, Too Tall and Madonna are entirely the creation of Ralph (now Rocky).

Pickleball - April 5, 2011

It promised to be one of our windier days, but instead, we had a stiff breeze, semi-strong winds and some bluster (nothing to do with the weather, though). Players present: Ralph (shown above R) Gary A (above L), Mike, Joanie, Anne, Peter P, Steve, Sharon and Ron. Jan also happened by for a short visit. Stevie Wonder was back in full force apparently making a full recovery from recent surgery. Gary A was also back about 97% recovered from his recent surgical procedure.
The 'breezes' did require some advance planning especially when serving or trying for lobs. But, the weather event, added some spice to the matches of which there were many.

We UPGers played for about 2 hours and enjoyed the matches almost as much as we enjoy throwing barbs around. If you play with this group - it's best if you have thick skin! Fun as usual.
Special note: We are trying to arrange (with Dick Stone) a pickleball get-together at Keowee Keys. Details to follow. And, Smoke, of the Lake Lure, NC crowd advises that his crew is planning a different pickleball tournament setup for this year's Olympiad so all contestants - win or lose - will be able to play more matches. April Fools Day - Fri, P'ball - 2011

No pictures today. We had a bright day and plenty of wind. Eight showed: Mike, Bob H, Johnny, Carol, Ralph, Jan, Sharon & Ron. With eight players, the courts were always full and the folding chairs mostly empty, especially when they were being blown across the courts. But, as always, we managed to play hard and fast and had fun doing it. Otherwise, there is not much to report. No one has fallen lately, or tried to jump over the net. Bob-the-Hopp brought along some yum-oh brownies (with nuts, of course). He also brought the little table and Zip Locks. She wants her handle changed from Pit Bull to Dutchess (with the emphasis on the last syllable - Dutch-ess, not Dutch-iss). Apparently one or more of our p'ballers occasionally addresses her as Pit. Friday Pickleball - March 25, 2011

A windy, bright day greeted us at the Timmons International Pickleball Facility. And, 13 players were on hand to test their skills against hotties like Muriel the Masher, shown above. Present (including long-lost Peter Potosky - hereafter: Peter P), Mike, Peter, Ralph, Muriel (Cover girl), Gary, Jan, Anne, Johnny, Carol, Lynne, Sharon & Ron. The wind offered up some challenges and sometimes moved in-flight balls a few feet off course. But, we are used to that and after some adjustments most players used the wind to their advantage. Some very exciting games followed.

Tuesday P'ball - March 22, 2011

Close to 80 degrees today, and we aren't used to the warm weather yet. So, there was some suffering going on. Consequently, some attendees abbreviated their court-time and even their time at the court. Ten UPGers were present for all or some of the 2-hour session: Jan, Johnny, Carol, Ralph, Peter, Anne, Joanie, Bob H, Mike and Ron.

We had many fine games and, with a diminishing crowd as the day progressed, there was little down time. But, everyone managed to stay upright and plenty of excellent matches were completed. Joanie de Arc earned Player of The Day braggin' rights for her exceptional net play. She is now on the short list of players eligible for the drawing of a fabulous prize to be awarded during a drawing on April 31, 2011. Otherwise: there was a lot of discussion about reverting to our 'summer schedule' - that is - starting the sessions in the morning. Probably next week. We also revived the discussion about playing some evenings - maybe, late enough to play under the lights. Under consideration. Let's discussed these items when we play on Friday, 3/25/11 (at 1:00PM). Friday Pickleball - March 18, 2011

Eleven players were on hand for Pickleball on this hot day, including Her Ladyship Carol (Lash) who, after a few matches, took shelter in the only shady spot nearby (Photo above). The temperature reached 80 degrees, and some of the troops needed a little time to acclimate. Lash is showing how it is done here. But, she is not necessarily in a comfort zone, because Spidy was busy throwing balls over the fence - trying to land them on Carol. Players: Gary A, Ralph, Mike, Steve, Anne, Joanie, Carol, Johnny, Peter, Sharon and Ron.

As mentioned, it was hot for so early in the year, so some of the players faded early. Usually when it so hot there are leaves on the trees and we get some shade on the courts, but not yet. Wednesday - 3/16/2011 - P'ball

We were short on players, but not on action. Six showed, but we never had six at one time, because a few left early and one arrived late. The weather was just right so, who's complaining? Nobody. Present and accounted for: Mike, Gary, Jan, Joanie, Sharon and Ron.

Joanie de Arc arrived when we were half way through our paucity-of-players-shortened-session. But, she got in some doubles matches, one Canadian Doubles match and her first ever singles match. And, made a very good showing. Over-all our crew played for two hours. There was no sitting around. Loads of fun as usual. We suspect playing on an odd day (usually we play on Tue and Fri) accounted for the low (but, not lowly) turnout. Plus, Stevie Wonder was absent with a Doctors appointment. We heard later that he has a hernia and will probably have surgery next week and will be out of P'ball (and his other sporting activities) for about 6 weeks. Still waiting to hear from Dr John (Spinmaster).

Hope you don't party too hard on this St. Patrick's Day - or, if you do - that you'll be tough enough to show up for P'ball on Friday, March 18th. See you then. Spike

Pickleball Action - Friday, 3/11/11

We had 12 players in action including Johnny and Carol who have been out of action for a few weeks and Albert - visiting from Oregon who was playing is last session with our group before heading back home. Also: Anne, Jan, Gary, and Muriel, Mike, Steve, Ralph, Sharon and Ron.

It was great having Albert on hand for the last few weeks. he added a lot to our games and fit in with our crowd like a seasoned Upstate Pickleballer. He even brought cookies to a few matches which is always a plus. A very good player. Better to be his partner than his opponent. But, of course, there is plenty of excellent talent on the UPG roster, so Albert took his share of loses.

We had fine weather, with the usual March breezes. We are so used to windy days that it is hardly an issue - though it continues to be a good excuse factor.

So, one more great day on the courts, with some exceptional games, loads of camaraderie and another excellent final match where Stevie-no-Wonder and Albert (Albert-of-O) hung on and beat Spidy and Spike.

Tuesday P'ball - March 8, 2011

Eleven players were in action today: Peter, Gary, Steve, Ralph, Mike, Bob H, Jan, Anne, Albert, Sharon and Ron. We had friendly skies and the courts were dry for a change. So, lots of matches followed - some fiercely fought. We destroyed two pickleballs, scuffed up some paddles and left welts on a few players who made the mistake of 'receiving' overhand kill shots while hanging around the kitchen. Advice: if you decide to serve up a lob from the non-volley line, be sure to get it out of your opponent's reach, or be prepared to accept an almost guaranteed torso tattoo.

Miscellaneous: Spidy was was given an unofficial administrative warning because he made some colorful, comments about a ball which had been cleverly marked with a red a heart on it. Driving to Timmons with the windshield wipers on might have encouraged a few hasty U-turns, and perhaps it did. We'll never know. But, five came through. Upon arrival, the courts were wet and it was drizzling. We decided to play anyway, and vowed not to make any risky moves for fear of taking diggers. It drizzled on and off. We five: (Albert, Anne, Steve, Lynne and this scribe) kept playing and finally the rain stopped all-together and a breeze picked up to start the court-drying process. Our matches picked up in intensity. We ended up playing for 2-1/2 hours, rotating the odd player in after each game. Some very exciting games followed with one match going to 14-12. Our fivesome was fairly well balanced in the ability department with the edge going to Albert. Consequently, each match was a battle. Surprisingly (or not surprisingly - you choose) the day's wins and loses came out even. Chew on that statistic for a while!

Tuesday Pickleball - March 1, 2011

Ten players were on hand for today's matches. Everyone was hitting on all 8 cylinders and that made for some very exciting games - one with a touch of vehemence. Force 6 Friday - February 25, 2011

This day would best be described as blustery. The wind conditions have been Officially rated as a Force 6 on the Beaufort Scale. Seven showed up to play anyway, including Albert, who drove all of the way from Oregon to join the UPGers for some hard-core P'ball. Albert and his family were waiting for us when we arrived. The courts had a wet area - so, right after introductions we handed Albert a push broom and he attacked the puddle with considerable vigor and a fair amount of good humor. Below: Albert @ work.

Also present: Mike, Steve, Anne, Gary A, Sharon & Ron. Spidy brough a very nice batch of cookies and his paddle was returned to him unharmed. The cookies WERE NOT a bribe, as payment for the return his paddle which was left behind the last time Spidy played. Really.

As noted the wind was very strong and gusty - with enough force to blow over our chairs and to deposit all loose balls against the fence at the NE corner of the courts. Turns out Albert is a very good player and a good sport. We played for about 2 hours and had a good time. The 2nd plus: it was easy to shag the balls! Tuesday P'ball - 2/22/11 - What About Bob?

Yo P'ballers:
We had 10 players on this bright, blustery day. As follows: Joanie, Jan, Carol, Johnny, Steve, Bob H, Ralph, Gary A, Sharon and Ron. What about Bob? The first photo below (taken on 2/15/11) shows Bob H (Buckeye) as he cozies up to his fellow P'ballers. He is a social animal, as anyone can see.

But, something must have set Buckeye off during the week (or, perhaps the other players were avoiding him), because in the 2/22/11 photo below you might notice that Bucky is pretty much by himself. The rest of the players were against the opposite fence taking advantage of the little shady spot there.

Even though Mr. Hopp tends toward standoffishness, we keep him in the UPG organization because he: can hit the ball smartly; is the most consistent provider of goodies; is the only one among us who always knows the score and who is serving.

Short on players, but long on good matches we had a great time in spite of the stiff breeze. 2nd photo above: Joanie de Arc hefts a serve. Funday Friday - 2/18/11 - P'ball & bull session

Fifteen players were in action today including explosive Catherine the Great and Cupcake shown above. The group in no special order: Spidy (visiting from NC), Bob H , Johnny, John, Gary, Gary A, Muriel, Jan, Anne, Joanie, Catherine, Lynne, Steve, Sharon and Ron. This was a beauty of a day; made it to 70 degrees; a breath of a breeze; sunny. Fifteen players makes for a crowd on two courts, so there was a little too much down time. But, we carried on.

Some of the troops were still standing after 3 hours. We played doubles and worked in a few singles matches as well once the crowd thinned out. Three highlights of note: One: When Spidy left the courts on Friday, he was not as fully equipped as he was when he arrived. He motored home without his paddle and as in all other cases - and there have been several - the paddle will be held hostage. It will be returned (redeemed) - unharmed - if Spidy pays a minimal bribe - in the form of yummies to share. He has been officially advised about the "arrangements". Two: Jan is a new Grandmother. Her 2nd Granddaughter Ava Taylor was born about a week ago. Jan is as proud as a peach. Congratulations. Three: Lynne (Ace) was on fire today and wore her nickname on here sleeve, where in one match, she served 3 aces in a row. Could very well be a record. The archives are being searched as you read this.

Ok. That's the report for Friday, 2/18/11. We'll be playing again (probably on Tuesday and Friday). Misc: The bathrooms at Timmons will be opened by March 1st, so you'll have to hold on until then! Good luck. No new info about the status of the court re-surfacing at Gowers, but we are hopeful that they will be ready by Spring (2011). Spike

Tuesday P'ball - February 15, 2011

Eleven showed up to play - here in the Upstate, that is. At Timmons: Bob H, Peter, Steve, Anne, Joanie, Ralph, John, Gary A, Gary, Sharon and Ron. The weather was kind to us - maybe too kind - as indicated in the photo below. Who's playing P'ball? We had 11 players. Seven are parked and one took the picture. This is not trick photography.

Eventually we filled both courts and kept at it for 2-1/2 hours. Good matches and scads of fun, but a little too quiet. Why? Because Spidy was no where to be seen (or heard). More to come*.

*BOLO for Spidy (aka Mike, Mighty Spidy, Mike-the-Long and Loquacious). There is an APB in effect. He was last seen heading north in a late model Japanese sedan (but, Made In The USA). He is armed. His MO is usually a 'kill shot' typically in or near the kitchen. The UPG Security Bureau believes that the suspect may have defected to a safe house (or, court) in NC or perhaps he is being held against his will. Description: Too tall, 181 pounds, prematurely slight of hair, ~~cruddy~~ ruddy chin. Do not try to apprehend this fugitive. Victim? To be determined.

Friday P'ball - 2/11/2011

No pictures today. Lucky you. We had a splendid day and a good turnout to boot. Fourteen players: Bob H., Steve, Mike, Peter, Joanie, Lynne, Johnny, Carol, John, Anne, Ralph, Gary A, Sharon and Ron. Bob (Buckeye) H. brought a nice batch of brownies lovingly prepared by his darling wife Geri. Bob (thinks-of-everything) even brought a little serving table and ziplocks in case anyone wanted to take home some of the goodies. Which, they did. We also played Pickleball. Lots of exciting action including one game that went to 14-12. Due to the crowd - players lined their paddles up on the fence and picked them off one-at-a-time when they took their turn on the courts. A partly sunny day, about 50 degrees with a breeze and a bunch of pals playing Pickleball and gabbing between matches. It doesn't get much better than that. Looks like we'll have favorable weather next week, so polish up your paddles, dress those wounds and get yourself ready for more action!

Puddle-pushers + P'ball Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011

The courts were covered with puddles, so our maintenance crew went to work with squeegees and made short work of the task. The sun and breeze did the rest. In the mean time 14 players showed up to enjoy the day. Johnny and Carol were on the scene, having been vacationing in FL for a while, but keeping up with their P'ball skills by playing 4 times a week. Our group: Steve, Mike, Bob H, Johnny, Carol, Peter, Joanie, Anne, Jan, Catherine, Ralph, John, Sharon and Ron. It was such a beautiful day (50 degrees), that some of us stuck it out for 3-1/2 hours. Others lounged around, during breaks, like they were at the beach. A beautiful sight! We played hard and long and had some exceptional matches and perhaps a few lesser ones, too. But, it's all about fun, socializing and exercise. We accomplished all three. Enjoy the pictures below. See you on Friday. Four players showed up for P'ball on another 'off-day' forced upon us by the weather. We took one court and two tennis players took the other and we got along famously. P'ballers: Steve, Jan, Sharon & Ron. Weather: Overcast, cooler than it should have been at 42 degrees and no wind. Four players adds up to 3 possible doubles combinations. And we went through that cycle several times. There was, as expected, a winning and losing team each game. How's that for a coincidence? We had a great time. Even though were were short on numbers, we weren't short on enthusiasm. We'll see how the weather treats us next week. See you then.

13 on Friday - P'ball - 1/28/2011 AD

Thirteen troopers were on hand for another fun (and funny) day of P'ball, pot shots and general all around good time. Players: Ralph, Steve, Gary, Catherine, Gary A, Jan, Mike, Peter, Muriel, Joanie, Lynne, Sharon and the chronic Chronicler. Try saying that 3 times. Here's how it went:

A beautiful Red tailed hawk flew low over the courts. Brightened an already nice day.
A pair of turkey vultures circled above for several minutes. The general consensus was that the vultures seemed to be eyeing Stevie Wonder. No one can say for sure, but the scavengers flew off when Mr. Wonder started moving around. So, it's only a guess.
At one point loads of players were lounging around and wouldn't take to the courts - totally ignoring repeated requests from the Chief of Staff. The courts were cooling down. Muriel took charge, on her own accord - rattled off an order to commence playing. Within seconds the courts were occupied, balls were flying, paddles were flailing; players were leaping, lunging, lobbing - but, none were loafing. Muriel has now been elevated to the position of: Interim, part-time, non-payed, 2nd in command Court Coordinator, thrice removed. Congratz.

Thursday Ball Bashing - Jan.27, 2011

Another 'off' day @ P'ball- that is - not our usual Tuesday and Friday schedule. But, 7 players came out of the woodwork for another exciting day of ball bashing and ballbashing. In attendance: Ralph, Steve, Gary, Jan, Mike, Sharon & Ron. We are going to be playing again tomorrow, and I'm tuckered out - so, this BLURB will be short and sweet - like the Chief Blurbist.

It was a fine day, bright as can be with just enough breeze to push loose balls to one side of the court for easy retrieval by our professional shagging staff. With only 7 players, there wasn't much time to goof off, but we managed somehow. Besides doubles, we played several singles matches; Spidy seems to have the corner on that particular market. At least when he plays your humble servant, that is. But, it's a great workout! See you on Friday, Jan 28th. Spike

Possible gloomy weather on Tuesday forced a Monday session and that resulted in a smaller than usual turnout. But, it was a sparkling day and seven players appeared - paddles in hand - ready to play. Present: Ralph, Mike, Jan, Bill, Peter, Sharon & Ron. We played doubles on one court, and either Canadian Doubles, or singles on the other. Folks were either on their game or off their game. No middle-of-the-roaders today, so there were a lot of blowouts. But, who cares? We played for over two hours and had a good time in the process. Looking for 2 more sessions this week. Logo (Or, loco) Day - Friday, Jan 21, 2011

This was another Freaky Friday event. The charge: Wear something featuring a favorite school, sport or almost any event for which p'ballers had, or could borrow attire. This was our third such event and the participation was an overwhelming 125%. As you can see above and below, many institutions were represented including the University of Adidas - where ever that is? Thirteen players were on hand to display their wears (< intentional play on words!!!) and to play pickleball: Gary, Gary A, Bill, Bob H, Steve, Jan, Anne, Joanie, Ralph, Peter, John, Sharon & Ron.

The UPG photographer remained very professional, even while shooting the front of Anne's, Joanie's, and Sharon's T-shirts. They are represented by these logos: The Red Sox/Celtics, Marathon & Colts. Who's who?

John ready for a backhand. ... Highlights for some: Cupcake and Jan defeated Gary-The-Long-and-Lean & Ralph The-Sturdy in a brilliantly executed match. Much gaiety (and/or merriment) followed the victory by the dynamic damsels. One of the UPG enforcers suggested a penalty for excessive celebration, but the thought was stiffled quickly by the UPG Rules Committee. Anne (Pit Bull) was on her game - drilling the ball at will, and Stevie Wonder was as hot as a Chinese firecracker with a short fuse - and, twice as quick. And: We received a report from Kevin from the Rec. Dept. that the resurfacing and P'ball lining of the 5 courts at Gowers Park is still in the works. A few obstacles that were holding up the project have been resolved. No time frame yet, but things are looking up.

P'ball - Wednesday, Jan 19, 2011 - Back @ Timmons

A Wednesday match caught some of our players with other obligations, but we still ended up with 9 players: Bill (a newbie), Joanie, Catherine, Steve, Mike, Ralph, Gary, Sharon & yon editor. It was good to see Ralph back in action. The courts were wet, but our maintenance division spiffed them up pronto. New guy Bill (also a GNHA hiker) joined us for his 1st try at P'ball and did well. Within the 1st half hour he took a digger - judged as a low-degree of difficulty (LDD) swan dive. None the worse for wear, he only garnered a 7.0 for the effort. Much room for improvement.

Spidy was in action today, but still burdened with a cold. Under the circumstance - catching him in a debilitated state, and definitely out of sorts, I (Spike) cleverly challenged him to a singles match. It was the best idea I had all day. It went my way because I finally gained a sympathy point when he was leading 8-0. Spidy, clearly off his game battled back, and eventually, barely edged me by a scrawny 11-1 score.

The weather was exceptional, closing in on 60 degrees. So, we played for over two hours and had a good time as always. We'll be playing Friday @ Timmons. Watch for the notification.
